Cultural community garden in Bordeaux

Today let's go south, to Bordeaux.
And let's have a look on this piece of land surrounded by buildings located in the small residential area (rue Dupaty).
Nothing special at first sight!!! But the special thing is the process of creation of this garden as a cultural project. It was initiated by a local association, named “Bruit du Frigo” (it means the “noise from the fridge”), founded by architects and planners who help inhabitants to create projects in their neighbourhood. The action was to negotiate with the municipality to let this piece of land free of another private residential project to become a community neighbourhood, and it worked (which is not so common in
France!)... I took this photo last December late in the afternoon so the "garden of your sister" is less active than in spring for instance where people gather to meet and participate in a lot of different activities (art, sport, music like for the opening day of the garden). So nothing special at first sight but an important public space day by day.

In other neighbourhoods, the association took part in actions to sensitize kids and teenagers to their living environment, especially in some popular areas like Belcier (info only in French).

They also created a utopian urban design workshop with inhabitants of two popular central neighbourhoods of Bordeaux: Saint-Michel and the Queyries area.

If you are in Bordeaux you can go to the "Passe Muraille", 30 rue Bouquiere, where you can meet and chat with members of the association.

While walking in a neighborhood which was recently developped (Paris Rive Gauche) I saw that discrete adbuster inspired graffiti.

It means “area of advertisement harassment”

I found it appropriate for this "6-sheets" street furniture that was in front of me.

Different towers, different lives

Here is a picture I took some weeks ago in Nanterre (west of Paris metropolitan area).
I think this is a good one to expose the contrast of this area : on the left the towers of a big French bank in la Défense and on the right the "tours Aillaud" ,

a large housing estate built during the "Trente Glorieuses" in the popular city of Nanterre.

A mix of images of Athens (Greece):

Ano Liosa in the northern periphery of Athens (a popular area)

and Gazi, a former gas plant transformed into a cultural venue. I think it also accelerates the gentrification process of this part of central Athens.

Bogaziçi Üniversitesi (3)

But one thing was strange to me it was to see companies advertising in the campus like here a turkish bank.

Here a famous swiss company !

And sometimes the companies have to cope with students demonstrations.
Here some students denounced this famous pharmaceutical company for problems of maltreatment in Africa (if I remember well 'cause it was in May 2005).

Bogaziçi Üniversitesi (2)

The "green area" on south campus.
It is the place to be between two courses ot just to have a nap at the end of the day.

Bogaziçi Üniversitesi

Here are some pictures I took during my semester as an exchange student in Bosphorus University (Bogaziçi Üniversitesi in Turkish).

Here is the view from the men's dorm on the south campus.

They have a really nice campus
